Low Fade vs Mid Fade vs High Fade: Which One Is Right for You?
When you sit down in the chair, one of the first questions your barber will ask is where you want the fade to start. Low, mid, or high — the answer changes the entire look. Here’s a breakdown so you can walk in with confidence.
Low Fade
A low fade starts just above the ear and around the neckline. The transition from length to short happens in a tight zone near the bottom of the head. The result is subtle and clean — more of a shape-up than a dramatic contrast.
Low fades work great if you want to keep things sharp without going too bold. They’re also a good choice if you’re new to fades and want to ease into the look.
Mid Fade
The mid fade starts around the middle of the head — roughly at the temple. It creates a more noticeable contrast between the top and the sides without being extreme. This is one of the most versatile fade levels and works well with most hair types, lengths, and styles.
If you’re not sure where to start, the mid fade is a solid choice for just about everyone.
High Fade
The high fade starts near the top of the head, leaving very little length on the sides. The contrast between the top and the sides is dramatic and intentional. High fades are bold, require clean execution, and demand a barber who knows what they’re doing.
At AOE, high fades are handled with precision. The blend, the line, the graduation — everything has to be exact.
Which Fade Is Right for You?
